The Marble Church and the Botanical Gardens

Hey! I know its been awhile since I've added any new pictures, but frankly time is of the essence this past week. Lots of homework due, on top of studio. Anyway, I recently went to the botanical gardens located in the city center. Its still dead of winter, so the outside was mainly dead plants, but inside The Glass House was a thriving rainforest. When I say rainforest, I mean they had water misting out on top of the plants, and they actually dripped down on us like rain. The humidity was up to around 80 percent, so you can imagine walking from a 25 degree, 10-20% humidity exterior to that. Needless to say, it was hot and muggy. My camera lens fogged over, so I started using it to my potential. I took lots of pictures, so this is only a few of them. You can see the rest by clicking on the Botanical Gardens link on the right.

Just this past Wednesday I had the opportunity to journey to the Marble Church, or Fredrik's Kirkke as it is properly known. It is an amazing church, based on the design of the The Duomo in Florence. The dome is round, not segmented, but the interior is said to be an almost exact replica. I haven't been to The Duomo yet, but I plan to go there over break. The Marble Church was one of the most amazing feelings I've had while in Denmark. You really feel humbled as soon as you walk in. However, I'll let the pictures do the talking. As with the gardens, there is a link to the full list of pictures to the right.

Festalavn!!

Its Festalavn! Sunday was the Danish celebration for what we call Fat Tuesday, or the French Mardi Gras. It is actually quite similar to our Halloween, except its not meant to be scary. Instead children, and some adults, dress in costume to have fun and celebrate. They even go around asking for candies and treats! And just like in the U.S., college age student love to join in on the childhood memories and dress up and have parties for themselves. Saturday night was the party at Hatten, the bar next to my kollegium. My friends went as a whole variety of people. Anywhere from an arbitrary superhero, to Walker, Texas Ranger, to a cow. I, however, decided to follow the American tradition for college students to go as something very controversial. I went as the prophet Muhammed. That's right, Muhammed. I learned how to properly wrap a turban, and drapped a white sheet over my shoulders as a shawl, and I even wore sandles. To top of the costume, I wore tan makeup to show my dedication to being authentically middle eastern. I didn't know if I was going to be beat up, tortured, ridiculed, or wether it would be something that the Danes would understand as humor and comedy. Fortunetly, they found it humorous. I even had a Danish guy come up and start praising Allah in some sort of prayer (not really speaking Arabic, though), and then quickly following that with hystarical laughter. Needless to say, it was a fun night. I'll post pictures as soon as I get them.
