Festalavn!!

Its Festalavn! Sunday was the Danish celebration for what we call Fat Tuesday, or the French Mardi Gras. It is actually quite similar to our Halloween, except its not meant to be scary. Instead children, and some adults, dress in costume to have fun and celebrate. They even go around asking for candies and treats! And just like in the U.S., college age student love to join in on the childhood memories and dress up and have parties for themselves. Saturday night was the party at Hatten, the bar next to my kollegium. My friends went as a whole variety of people. Anywhere from an arbitrary superhero, to Walker, Texas Ranger, to a cow. I, however, decided to follow the American tradition for college students to go as something very controversial. I went as the prophet Muhammed. That's right, Muhammed. I learned how to properly wrap a turban, and drapped a white sheet over my shoulders as a shawl, and I even wore sandles. To top of the costume, I wore tan makeup to show my dedication to being authentically middle eastern. I didn't know if I was going to be beat up, tortured, ridiculed, or wether it would be something that the Danes would understand as humor and comedy. Fortunetly, they found it humorous. I even had a Danish guy come up and start praising Allah in some sort of prayer (not really speaking Arabic, though), and then quickly following that with hystarical laughter. Needless to say, it was a fun night. I'll post pictures as soon as I get them.
